The character was based on the famous Victorian actor Henry Irving's role as
Cardinal Thomas Wolsey in Shakespeare's play "Henry VIII."
Sir Henry Irving (John Henry Brodribb, 1838–1905) was the greatest English actor and theatre director of the Victorian era.
Having revived the British Shakespearean tradition, he became a legendary theatre figure and the first actor to be knighted.
